Travel Tweets

Twitter LogoNot sure how many of you are familiar with twitter.  If you aren’t familiar with it, twitter is a microblogging site that asks the simple question: “What are you doing?”  You have 140 characters to answer that.  You can also post links and pictures.  You decide who you want to “follow”, which means that you see their updates.  And anyone that follows you can see your updates.

So now I will get to the point.  A lot of companies in the travel industry tweet about travel destinations, deals, links, etc.  If you are on Twitter, follow these people:

-rickseany-CEO of Farecompare.com posts great flight deals.  Oftentimes he posts the deals before they have even gone live, which gives you a great head start!

-wendyperrin-Writer for Conde Nast Traveler Magazine, and The Perrin Post, a great travel blog.  She provides great travel related links and insight to the travel industry.

-adventuregirl-A great source for travel deals all over the world.  She tweets a number of great deals everyday.

If you haven’t joined Twitter yet, do it now!  You are really missing out!

Europe Budget Tips

The dollar has gained on the Euro since I wrote this article last summer, but the tips still apply!

What are your best tips for traveling on a budget?  What do you splurge on and where do you save?

Euro Music

Want to know what music the cool kids in London are loving?  Or what Parisians have been rocking out to lately?  Just go to the iTunes store home page, and scroll down to the very bottom.  There is a menu that says “My Store”, so just click on it and select a different country.  There you can find what the top songs, albums, tv shows and a lot of others are right now.  Cool right?  Fun to hear the music people are loving around the world!

I’m a travel agent!

I wanted to let you know that I am a travel agent now, so I can help with any trips you want to take, not just to Europe.  I can help you decide where to go, and get you great deals on hotels, cruises, and vacation packages.  And let me tell you- there are some great deals out there right now!!!  I can’t usually get discounts on domestic flights, but I can do some research and find you the best deal.  So you get great prices for your trips, and you don’t have to deal with the hassle of planning!  If you can get a better deal booking something on your own I’ll tell you.  So email me when you are ready to take a trip!

Clifftop Towns

I just came across a really cool article about Clifftop Towns and was really excited to see that I had been to one of them!  I went to Manarola, Italy this last summer, and the picture above is one I took.  Looks a lot like the picture in the article, minus the fancy lighting doesn’t it?

Manarola is in the Cinque Terre region on the north, west coast of Italy.  There are 5 small towns all very close together which decend in size, and you can hike from town to town.  Manarola is the fourth town down the row, and we stayed in Vernazza, the second town.  I loved all of the towns in Cinque Terre- so gorgeous, the people are very friendly, and everything was priced extremetly reasonably.

Not surprising that none of these towns are in the United States.  Something tells me that they wouldn’t be up to safety codes!

Get Your Walk Score

People Walking

I just came across a great website.  It is called Walk Score.  If you enter an address, it tells you how walkable the area is.  It tells you what and how far away the closest grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, cinemas, parks, libraries, bookstores, and other places are.  It also gives the location a score based on how many places are close by.

I thought this would be a great way to research hotels.  I entered the address of the hotel we stayed at in London, and it got a score of 98 out of 100, which makes sense since there were so many great places really close by.  I think you can tell a lot about a place based on what is close by.  For example, if there are a lot of bars close by, you can assume it will be a pretty noisy location.

I hope this helps next time you are researching for a trip!

Top Ten Destinations for Independent Travelers in 2009

BootsnAll is a great travel website that I frequently reference when I am planning a trip.  The message boards are really helpful, and anytime I have asked a question I have gotten great answers back.

They also write some great travel related articles.  I am always thinking of new places I would like to visit, and BootsnAll helped me out by publishing a list of their Top Ten Destinations for Independent Travelers in 2009.

Not sure about Bangladesh, but I have been dying to go to Australia!  Who’s coming with me???

How does a 6-night London Fling Sound?

Big Ben

Virgin Atlantic Airways is offering vacation specials through Virgin Vacations.  They have 6 night flight and hotel packages for as low as $599 per person from NY.  The packages are more expensive from other cities, althrough still a great deal.  So if you have been wanting to go to London now is the time!

International Friends

coffee

I came across a great site called likemind, which sets up places for people to meet for coffee all over the world.  I love this idea because it seems like such a great way to make new friends.  I also think it would be a perfect way to meet locals if you are visiting somewhere.  So check this site before your next trip!

Great time to visit Europe!

Good news travelers- the pound is shrinking!  And even better news- the Euro is as well.  Exchange rates have dropped a lot since the highs they reached last summer (when I was visiting of course!)

1 Euro is now worth $1.26 and 1 British Pound is now worth $1.58.

Virgin Atlantic has a great fare sale right now for flights to London.  Rates start at $218 each way from NY and $313 each way from LA.  Start packing your bag!
